Treatment

It can be very difficult to decide the first time whether colic is the early feature of something more seriousor is simply colic. It depends on the overall condition of the child; there is more likely to be a serious cause if thechild has a temperature, the colic is persistent, there is vomiting and diarrhoea and the abdomen is tender to touch. If there is any doubt a medical opinion should be sought to exclude one of the causes of abdominal pain (see abdominal pain). In the case of three month colic, little can be done other than comforting the child as anti-spasmodic drugs previously used are no longer recommended in that age group. Simple painkillers such as paracetamol help. It is also sensible to avoid gassy drinks.
