The atria are relatively small chambers that sit on top of the powerful ventricles, which providemost of the muscular action to pump blood around the body. An atrial septal defect refers to a hole between the two atria through which blood passes in a jet from theleft side of the heart into the right. This is a problem that often causes no particular symptoms during childhood and it is only inadult life that problems arise due to over distension of the lungs with blood or to irregularheart rhythms.
