SoutheastAsia. Different species
likely originated in different
locations with S. barberi
originating in India and S. edule
and S. officinarum coming from
New Guinea. The thickstalk stores
energy as sucrose in the sap. From
this juice, sugar is extracted by
evaporating the water.
