NO April Fool
•—★—••—★—•
The love of blindly following the west has given currency to several of their customs in our society. One of them is the tradition of celebrating April fool. To play a prank on another, or to poke fun at him by deceiving him with a lie is not only considered acceptable on the first of April, but is also admired as a commendable act and a mark of excellence. He who deceives more people than others, and deceives them with more flair and finesse and with more gall and grace has taken full advantage of the custom of April fool. He is considered worthy of praise for having done that.
This taste of trick playing, which can rightly be called a tasteless fun seeking, has brought on financial and physical harm to many unsuspecting victims. In fact, some have lost their precious lives as a result. They were deliberately given false news about a tragic event involving their near and dear ones; news that some frail and feeble folks could not bear, and succumbed.
Based on a lie, a deception, and a desire to laugh at the innocence and ignorance of unsuspecting folks, this custom is obviously quite low on the scale of morality and ethics.
According to the Muslims it consists of the following worst sins:
1) to lie
2) to deceive
3) to inflict pain upon others
4) to celebrate the memory of an incident the origin of which is idolatry, or superstition, or an insulting and a`rude joke against a messenger of God.
Allah says: ► ...Allah guides not one who transgresses and lies!
sura GHAFIR chapter 40 verse 28
Allah says: ► O ye who believe! let not some men among you laugh at others: it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): nor let some women laugh at others: it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (Indeed) doing wrong.
sura AL HUJURAT chapter 49 verse 11
Allah says: ► If anyone disputes in this matter with thee now after (full) knowledge hath come to thee, say: "Come! let us gather together―our sons, and your sons our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie!"
sura AL~E~IMRAN chapter 3 verse 61
Allah says: ► O ye who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are true (in word and deed).
sura AT TAWBA chapter 9 verse 119
And what is forbidden as regards telling of lies.
Narrated 'Abdullâh [radhi-yAllâhu 'anhu]: The Prophet [sal-Allâhu 'alayhiwa sallam] said, "Truthfulness leads to Al-Birr (righteousness) and Al-Birr (righteousness) leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fujûr (i.e. wickedness - evildoing), and Al-Fujûr leads to the (Hell) Fire. And a man keeps on telling lies until he is written as a liar before Allâh."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 8/6094)
Narrated Abu Hurairah [radhi-yAllâhu 'anhu]: Allâh's Messenger [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam] said,"The signs of a hypocrite are three: Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; and whenever he promises, he breaks his promise; and whenever he is entrusted, he betrays (proves to be dishonest)."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 8/6095)
Narrated Samurah bin Jundub [radhi-yAllâhu 'anhu]: The Prophet [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam] said, "I saw (in a dream), two men came to me." Then the Prophet [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam] narrated the story (saying): "They said: The person, the one whose cheek you saw being torn away (from the mouth to the ear) was a liar and used to tell lies and the people would report those lies on his authority till they spread all over the world. So he will be punished like that till the Day of Resurrection."
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 8/6096)
Narrated Abu Umamah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good.
(Sunan Abu Dawud Book 41 Hadith 4782)
'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Truth leads one to Paradise and virtue leads one to Paradise and the person tells the truth until he is recorded as truthful, and lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell, and the person tells a lie until he is recorded as a liar.
(Sahih Muslim Book 32 Hadith 6307)
'Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Telling of truth is a virtue and virtue leads to Paradise and the servant who endeavours to tell the truth is recorded as truthful, and lie is obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell-Fire, and the servant who endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar. Ibn Abu Shaiba reported this from Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him).
(Sahih Muslim Book 32 Hadith 6308)
Now the Muslims must decide for themselves whether this custom is worth celebrating in the Muslim society? Should it be adopted and given prevalence here?
Thank Allah that in our society this custom of April fool is not celebrated much. Yet we still hear about some incidences of people celebrating it. Without thinking or being aware of its origin some people participate in it. If they seriously reflect upon its reality, its origins and its results, then surely, Insha allah, they will realize the importance of avoiding it.
