Media - cc.slovenia

Media
The development of the media in Slovenia since 1990 is in many ways comparable to that in other Central European countries, but there are many differences. The Slovenian media scene is very diverse and heterogeneous. Its beginnings can be traced back to the 19th century, when print media, daily newspapers and periodicals in Slovene started being published in growing numbers. The evolution of the media gained momentum in the final decade of the last century. With the advent of the market economy, the media sector was privatised, which brought about significant changes.

The Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia ensures freedom of the press and other forms of public communication and expression. In June 2001, Slovenia passed an Act on the Media, providing rules and regulations for the entire media sphere.

In the past sixteen years, Slovenia has seen an exceptional increase in the number of (mainly electronic) media, and there are few other countries in Europe with a comparably large number of media concentrated in such a small area. The number of print media has doubled. Slovenian media are almost entirely domestically owned. Nowadays, all leading Slovenian media have known majority owners, usually large Slovenian holdings and companies.

Slovenia did not fall behind in introducing technical innovations and trends in modern journalism. Journalism has been offered as a BA course at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana for several decades.
