Rangers manager Alex McLeish has failed in a bid to have Dado Prso rested from Wednesday's friendly with Brazil.
Croatia coach Zlatko Kranjcar intends to play the Ibrox striker even though he is toiling with an ankle injury.
McLeish fumed: "This is where he is getting it wrong. He is not helping Rangers - or helping himself.
"This is what I have explained in two or three faxes sent to them, that we will keep him fresh for the games that really matter - the World Cup games."
Kranjcar insists he had done Rangers enough favours in the past and would ignore the club's wishes to keep him in Glasgow.
That stance has angered McLeish, who argues that resting the 30-year-old is the only sensible option.
"He has had the sort of injuries in his career that eventually catch up with you," added McLeish.
"So the more games he plays the more chance there is of not having a sharp Dado Prso for the World Cup games when it really matters.
"I am very understanding about the need for players to play for their countries.
"He may go but again I would be disappointed if they make him fly because flying can make the joints swell up.
"But at the end of the day our hands are tied if they really want him to go."
Marvin Andrews is needed across the Atlantic as Trinidad and Tobago take on USA but as this is a World Cup tie McLeish has no complaints about another long haul for the centre-back.
Scotland manager Walter Smith has named no Rangers players in his squad to take on Austria on Wednesday but Thomas Buffel will be on duty for Belgium when they play Greece in Brussels that night.
