Saturn
Saturn - saturn
Saturn lies at an average distance of 1427 million km from the Sun.
A Saturn year is 10,759 Earth days. (over 29 years) And a Saturn day is 10 hours, 13 minutes and 59 seconds.
744 Earth's could fit inside of Saturn.
The equatorial diameter is 120,536km and polar diameter is 108,728km.
Saturn rotates at an inclination of 26.5 degrees off of its axis.
The overall density of Saturn is less than that of water. If you could find an ocean big enough to drop Saturn in to,it would float!
The rings were discovered in 1656 by Christiaan Huygens.
Saturn's rings are far more beautiful than the rings of Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune.
It is believed that Saturn's rings will one day disappear. They will disperse into space or get sucked into the planet by its pull of gravity. This will happen in about 50 million years.
The full diameter of the ring system is about 270,000km. But the thickness is no more than a few ten of metres.
Current estimates total the number of moons at 47.
Saturn's largest moon, Titan which was visited by the Huygens probe was believed to have liquid methane oceans, but recent radar images from Cassini has revealed them not to be seas, but sand dunes.
The dunes are 100 metres high and run parallel to each other at Titan's equator. The images look just like radar images of deserts in Namibia or Arabia.
Titan may be volcanic, according to data from the Cassini-Huygens probe, which is currently in orbit around Saturn.
Its surface is covered with volcanoes of different sizes and shapes. Unlike the type of volcanoes on Earth (and even on the Jovian moon, io, which elects molten rock and minerals). The volcanoes on Titan are thought to elect icy substances such as ammonia and methane. Both ammonia and methane are gases on Earth, but on the cold surface of Titan, they flow as liquids.
It is thought that the volcanoes are made of water-ice. This phenomenon of ice volcanoes is known as cryovolcanism, and was first proposed to take place on Titan by Carl Sagan.
Titan is much larger than Mercury and Pluto and could easily have become a planet itself if it wasn't orbiting Saturn.

The "shepherd" moons consist of:
Pan, Atlas, Prometheus And Pandora.

Mimas resembles the Death Star from "Star Wars" with its huge crater which is one third the size of the moon itself.

Hyperion is heavily cratered. It may have been partly destroyed by a major collision.

Scientists believe Enceladus to have a liquid core.
Dione is accompanied in its orbit around saturn by the small Trojan satellite, Helene.
Iapetus strangely is two-toned.one side bright coloured, the other reddish.

Tethys is another icy world.Made almost entirely of water-ice.With a huge 65 kilometer-wide trench covering three quarters of Tethys' sureace.Tethys is accompanied in orbit by Telesto and Calypso.Telesto flies 60 degrees in front of Tethys and Calyso 60 degrees behind.
Epimetheus and Janus share the same orbit. As they orbit saturn they swap positions. This happens once every four years.
Phoebe is the only other saturn moon, beside Hyperion that is not tidally locked (like our very own moon) with one face pointing toward saturn.
