A culmination of this bridge building technology has produced one of the wonders of the world called the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.It connects the Japanese city of Kobe on Japans main island,Honshu,with Awaji Shima island acroos the Akashi Strait.
The work of construction the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was started in may 1988.
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge has also to face earthquakes.Infact,soon after the towers were completed and cables placed,a seuere earthquake struck the regio on January 17,1995.The 1991 metre span makes Akashi Kaikyo Bridge the world's longest bridge.
The bridge had to provide sufficient room underneath it for the ships to pass to and fro.The main towers of the bridge have been raised to a height of 300 metres.This makes it world's tallest bridge.
The bridge can withstand wind speeds of 180 miles per hour.
3000000 kilometres long cable enough to girdle the earth 7.5 times has been used.The diameter of this cable is a gigantic 60 metres.The bridge has been suspended from this cable.
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge cost nearly 5 billion US Dollars.
