Movie review for
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi:

Rating: 4/5

After the unforgettable Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge & Mohabbatein, when Aditya Chopra again works with Shah Rukh Khan, obviously a question arises, can this combo create magic again? Can we get another DDLJ or Mohb.?
After lots of waits and expectations, at last Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has rocked the screen, in a time when Bollywood is facing it's most difficult time in last couple of years. Due to the recent terrorist attack (26/11), the movie halls are sufferering much due to audience crisis.
After all the recent releases bombing at the box office, it's RNBDJ for which every eyes were looking for.
Can the Box office King bring back the audiences to cinema halls?
First of all let me answer the first question that you want to know,
Has RNBDJ reached its sky high expectations?
Well. That depends how you wanted the film to be. We should remember that a film like DDLJ doesn't come everytime. So, RNBDJ is not DDLJ. It's not also Mohabbatein.
It is completely different from these twos from it's soul. Wait wait wait.
That doesn't mean the film is bad. To my opinion, it's one of the finestly narrated films of recent time.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi narrates the story of an ordinary man Surinder Sahni (played by Shah Rukh Khan), who lives in Amritsar, works in a government office and leads a very simple life. But his life undergoes a great change the moment he bumps into a cute & flamboyant girl Taani (played by Anushka Sharma). By twist of fate, they are married off. But while Suri loves Taani hugely, Taani finds no interest in her simple husband. One day she wants to join a dancing competition named "Dancing Jodi". Suri permits her and hits upon a plan. He undergoes a major facial change & transforms himself into cool & sexy Raj Kapoor and becomes his wife's dance partner without let her know who he actually is. Now, will Taani go back to her simple & ordinary husband or she will be charmed by Raj's charishma?

The plot of RNBDJ is quite exceptional. The critics may try to find similarities with some too old movies, but being a modern time cinegoer, you have to agree that the film comes as a whiff of fresh air in a time when "old wine in a new bottle" is being seemed as the formula on which the industry is depending!

But RNBDJ is not as flawless as Adi's earlier works. In fact, it has some major faults in it's screenplay which you really can't overlook even being a general moviegoer. The first question that arises in your mind for sure is that why Taani couldn't recognise her husband?
Yes. He changes his face, but what's about the voice? Also, whatever make up one takes, his wife's not recognising him seems to be very far from reality.
Also, how the marriage between Suri-Taani happens was a routine Bollywood story which doesn't have any charm for the modern moviegoers. In fact, the film honestly opens just after Taani reaches Suri's home.
Fortunately, director Aditya has been able to cover his flaws while wearing the writer's cap. His convincing storytelling will surely make the audiences forget about the faults.
Much have already been talked about the running period of the film. Yes. The rumors are true. RNBDJ lasts for 2.45 hours which is lengthy in all respects & all means but fortunately, it has the ability to hold your attention for this long period. So, don't think much about the length!
The sequences are well executed. Especially, the initial scenes between SRK-Anushka are beautifully canned which should bring the cinematographer tremendous praise.
The movie is full of emotional, action, light & masala scenes. The funny scenes are truely enjoyable & sure to bring the house down.
Ravi Chandran's cinematography is first rate. Shamak Davar's choreography is excellent especially in the song where SRK pays homage to Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand Shammi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor & Rajesh Khanna [Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte]. Dance Pe Chance is also rich in this field. Haule Haule is also very well picturised.
Sets could be better. A Yash Raj touch is missing here! In every scene, signs of tight budget was noticed. One wonders if it really is the directional venture of the owner of the biggest production house of India! Yes. Suri is a plain man and he can live in a plain house. But couldn't the Japani Mela & Raju Motors be decorated more stylishly? What about it Aditya? In your previous films, the locales were breath stopping. And here, they are plain average which gives the film a poor taste.
Salim-Sulaiman's music is another field where the film scores full mark because it goes fully with the mood of the film. "Haule Haule" is a superb track in term of composition & singing. Sukhwinder Singh has proved his talent as the "Voice of SRK" again. "Dance Pe Chance" is foot tapping. "Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai" & "Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte" are rich in lyrical value. They too sound well. But what takes the music to a new level altogether is their stylish & exceptional picturisations. There's no skin show like "Mere Khaboon Mein Jo Aye" in DDLJ. There's also no eye shattering spot to shoot like "Humko Haminse" from MOHABBATEIN. But yet, the picturisations of the tracks will surely touch your heart.
Let's come to the performance.
Shah Rukh Khan, the actor per excellence, has surrendered himself completely to the role & delivered a performance which should be counted as one of his finest works to date. He not only carries the two completely different roles: Suri & Raj, but also the whole film on his firm shoulder. He was completely natural while carrying the critical role of Suri & was in top form while handling his famous Raj part. He has done an extra-ordinary job while playing an ordinary man's role.
Anushka Sharma is impressive. She suprises by carrying her role with supreme confidence. She handles the pressure of sharing screen with industry's biggest star very well. She was not overshadowed by King Khan like Deepika Padukone was in Om Shanti Om. During almost all the movie , she matches SRK scene to scene.
Vinay Pathak is also superb in his role.
He springs a suprise by his confident performance. To work with an actor like SRK & make one's presence felt is no simple ability.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi has many moments which will bring smile to your face (Dhoom Machale scene, Suri's fight with Sumo, honeymoon in Japan etc.)
Also it has many moments which will make you sad, make you cry. Especially, the emotional scenes of Suri is sure to make your eyes wet if you are a human being.

On the whole, it's a complete family package which will entertain an youth of 19 as well as a housewife of 39.
The film should recieve impressive response from all over (including abroad. It should get good opening in USA, UK & UAE). Facing no opponent in the upcoming two weeks, it's going to be the biggest hit of Yash Raj Films in recent years.
