Possibly my fav film. I know its slow, pretentious, boring, bland...Yet its also very beautiful 2 look @. I think of it as a cinematic poem. & i defy anyone not 2 b moved by HAL's death...If u dont fall asleep b4 then. If u like a film with lots of action & a plot, this aint 4 u.
The film starts with the missing link from ape 2 man being taught how 2 use tools & survive by a mysterious black monolith. Its telling that the 1st tools used r 4 killing (animals 4 food) & then as weapons 2 defend a waterhole, the 1st war.
Then we get a much talked about 'time jump' 2 the future. A monolith has been dug up on the moon & as soon as its xposed 2 sunlite it sends a signal 2 another monolith in orbit around Jupiter.
A mission is sent 2 investigate. It is here aboard the Discovery that most of the films famous sceens (& very limited action) takes place. & the computer HAL 9000 is probably the films most human character...
The film is visualy stunning, dares 2 pose questions without answering them & more than holds its own in the fx dept. Its advisable 2 read Aruther C Clarkes novel as book & film were written 2gether & neither is complete without the other.
