AN ALTAR
Can be fixed or portable. Your altar is a special area for magick workings. It should only be used for this purpose. The Altar should be set up in the North or East. It can be decorated or plain. The following goes on your altar:
* One or two illuminator candles, placed at the top of the altar
* A silver candle for the Goddess, a gold candle for the God
* The censer and insence, are associated with Air and placed in the East
* The athame and red fire candle is associated with Fire and placed in the South
* A chalice and bowl of water is associated with Water and is placed in the West
* A bowl of salt and the cauldron represents Earth and is placed in the North
* A pentagram is placed in the middle of the altar with the bell on the left
AMULETS
Used to protect the spellcaster from any evil influences that may be about. Simply stated, an amulet is an ornament or piece of jewellery worn. They have been worn from the earliest times and are still used today.
ATHAME
A blunt double-edge knife, approximately six inches (15cm) in length, that is used in ritual to represent the God. The athame is associated with the Element Air. It is considered to be an extention of one's magickal strength and power. The athame can be used for casting a magick circle, directing energy, or for banishing negative spirits.
BOOK OF SHADOWS
Your personal magickal book. In it you record your spells, chants, dreams or any other material that has to do with your working with the Craft.
A BOLINE
A traditional witches' knife. Usualy white-handled with a curved blade, it is used to cut plands and herbs.
BOWLS
At least two are needed - one in which to keep salt, the other for water. It's handy to keep the ingrediants of spells to be cast at hand in a suitably concecrated, appropriately coloured bowl.
BROOMSTICKS
Are not used for flying - Lol. A broom, known in the witches vocabulary as a besom, is used to seep out negative influences from the area to be used for magick-making.
CAULDRON
Represents the Goddess and is used for cooking or burning incense in as well as scrying and holding safely things to be used in ritual or magick.
CHALICES
Are used to drink consecrated liquids during magick-making Cups of fancy mugs that represent the Goddess. They are also associated with the Element Water. A chalice is used in doing the great rite - a symbolic unification of the male and female in which an athame is lowered into a chalice, blessing the wine or water. Some witches use ornate, metal ones studded with semi-precious stones; others enjoy the simplicity of crystal or glass. The chalice is receptive and feminine in nature, it represents mystery, hope and promise.
INCENSE
Comes in stick, cone and powder form. It is used in Air magick and to cleanse magickal tools and sacred space.
PENTAGRAM
Can be used as jewelery. It is also placed on the altar for protection. It is associated with the Element Earth.
A WAND
Can be made from a variety of materials, it is used to direct energy. Associated with the Element Air. It is used to draw magick symbols in the air, to direct energy and call upon the power of the Goddess.
A BELL
Used in ritual when calling in the quarters and deity (asking the four directions and the God and Goddess to join you). At the end of the ritual, the bell is rung to let the Elements return to their realms.
A CENSER
A special container used to burn incense. Censers often have feet so the heat they contain will not scorch the surface upon which they rest.
BURILS
Sharp-pointed instruments used to inscribe candles and other things that need to be similary marked
CANDLES
Are essencials, they are used in literally thousands of spells
HERBS AND CRYSTALS
Each has its own magickal properties
