A rune is a character in an ancient Germanic alphabet. The word rune comes from a Middle English word that means "secret writing." Runes are used as tools in divination and magick. Each letter in the runic alphabet has symbolic and magickal significance.
According to legend after the God Odin hung upside down from a tree for nine days he became the only true rune master. Only he completely understands the magickal significance of each rune. Many witches see the Hanged Man in the Tarot deck as Odin, hanging upside down reading the runes.
You can pull on the energy of a rune when doing magick by inscribing it on one of your magickal tools. For example if you were doing candle magick for luck, you might want to draw Sigel or Eolh on your candle. As a tool of divination, runes can be used in the same way as Tarot cards.
