The moon has always been associated with the Goddess, Witchcraft and the occult side of nature.

During the Middle Ages, occult philosophers believed the moon to be alchemical silver and the sun alchemical gold. Those who worked magick of any kind observed the movement of the moon. Witches invoked the Goddess by drawing down the moon, a rite dating back to centuries before the Christian era.

There are 13 full moons in the Wiccan calendar, each has a number of ancient names and magickal meanings. The energy present at each full moon can be focused for spiritual and intellectual endeavors.

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON
A blue moon is the second full moon that occurs during one calendar month. This happens every 2.72 years. A blue moon is considered extremely lucky and is used in magical rites for luck, prosperity and good fortune.

NOVEMBER - Snow Moon, Mourning Moon, or Moon of Storms. This is a time for going inward, rest and preparation, transformation and spiritual communion.

DECEMBER - Oak Moon, Long Night's Moon, or Winter Moon. This is a time for acknowledging death and rebirth, darkness and your spiritual journey.

JAN. WOLF MOON - The wolf is a companion to the witch and shaman. It protects and guards its home and family. This is a time to protect what we have as we consider new options.

FEB. STORM MOON - A storm is said to rage most fiercely before it ends. The end of winter, death and darkness is coming. A time to plan for the future and what we will persue in the months to come.

MAR. CHASTE MOON - The antiquated word for pure reflects greeting the year with a clear consciousness. A time to plant the seeds of desire.

APR. SEED MOON - Spring is in the air. This is the time when we physically put our desires into motion.

MAY HARE MOON - The hare was associated in Roman legends with springtime and fertility. A time to use the creative spirit to reaffirm our goals.

JUN. DYAD MOON - Dyad is the Latin name for pair. A time for equality, to seek balance between our physical and spiritual desires.

JUL. MEAD MOON - Mead was the traditional beverage in old Europe. A time to plan ahead for what we will do when we reach our goals.

AUG. WORT MOON - Wort is the Anglo-Saxon term for herb or green plant. This is the first harvest and a time to celebrate. A time for preserving what we have atained.

SEP. BARLEY MOON - The great harvest, a time for celebration and the realization of desired goals.

OCT. BLOOD MOON - Marks the season of hunting, blood is the force of life. Now is the time for thanksgiving,rest and reflection.
