Many practitioners find that to make their magick effective, they need to ground themselves before starting. Grounding ensures that the body's energies flow the way they should and also encourages the natural flow of energy from the Earth. In grounding, the body's energy centres - what in the ancient language of India are known as 'chakras' - are put into proper alignment.
Vivianne Crowley, a leading Wiccan and a great advocate of chakra energy, recommends the following method of opening these energy centers.
First of all visualize a circle of red light at the base of your spine. Now imagine that you are pulling a current of energy into it so that the light starts to glow and pulsate, becoming warmer and warmer spreading until it covers the whole of your spine.
Now draw more energy into the base of the spine and try to see it coiling around inside your belly like a snake untill you can see the chakra there glowing orange, spinning and growing even larger.
In your mind's eye, visualize the snake rise to your solar plexus, filling the chakra there with glowing gold and as you continue to take in energy from the base of the spine, watch the solar plexus chakra become a warming sun spinning faster and faster.
Still drawing in energy through the spine, open the next chakras in turn - the heart chakra at the centre of the breast bone and see it spin in glowing green, and the throat, visualizing that one in throbbing blue.
Continue renewing the energy source through the spine. Let each chakra feed the next and once each one is pulsating its own colour, open the chakra that exists behind the third eye in the centre of the forehead until it spins ever-faster in a haze of violet light. Still drawing in energy through the spine, pull it through each chakra before releasing it through the crown of the head, letting it cascade all around you in a dreamcoat of warmth which slowly turns to silvery white.
Now, your chakras are in perfect alignment and you can relax and get on with your ritual, perfectly grounded.
Later they will be closed, which is easily done by visualizing each chakra as a glass portal of its own colour and, starting at the crown of the head drawing white light down, through each one in turn. Imagine each portal closing as the light passes through, all, that is, except the crown and spine chakras. These remain open to energy from the Earth.
Opening and closing the chakras may sound like hocus-pocus. But those who do so as part of their ritual claim that it makes their spells exceptionally potent.
