The Buddhist stupaat Sanchi in MadhyaPradesh is situated on a hill called Bhilsa around 90 km from Bhopal.
The Great Stupa, asit came to be known, is a massivedome-shaped shrine of sandstone built over a relic of the Buddha. It is 16 m high and is regarded as the oldest stone structure in India. The site also contains two 5th-century A.D. temples of the Gupta period and two more stupas.
The four ornate gateways or toranas are 10.2 metres high and elaborately carved with scenes from the Buddha's life including the birth at Lumbini. The sculptures are among the loveliestexamples of Buddhist art in the world.
The Great Stupa was probably built during the reign of Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century B.C. Originally built of brick, the stupa was enlarged to double its size and encased in stone nearly a century later when the gateways and railings were added.
