JERUSALEM'S OLD CITY
A bazaar of living history, Jerusalem's Old City is a densely packed labyrinth of more than 100 streets, 1000 shops and more than 3000 years of human experience. For Christians, the most poignant of the many important places in the old city is the Via Dolorosa, or 'Way Of Sorrows'.
As you walked this sacred passageway, you are treading on paving stones that were here at the time of Christ. The stones were uncovered when new sewers were being dug in the 1970s, and rather than lock them away in a museum, the municipality had them relaid. It is this perpetuation of the ancient in the 20th century that creates the appeal of the Old City.
This is the route that Jesus is presumed to have taken as He carried His cross to Calvary (though the sanctity of the modern day route is based purely on faith, not fact).
Old City covers roughly 220 acres, sorrounding walls date to the rule of Sultan Suleiman. Work began on them in 1537 and was not completed until 1541. It has a total of 11 gates, but only seven are open.
Take a glimpse of some scenic and religious spots at the OLD CITY of JERUSALEM.
