The Awl and Center Punch | 087

The Awl and Center Punch
Two tools used for marking are the awl, and the center punch. The major difference between them is that the awl is not designed for use with a hammer or mallet. Palm pressure alone is used on an awl.
The awl is used to form starter holds for wood screws or nails. It is helpful in leatherwork and upholstery. It is also used for scribing lines or patterns on wood, metal, or plastic. The awl will need very little maintenance.
The center punch locates center points of drilling. It is most often used on metal. The sharp point struck with a ball peen hammer. A raised area around the center keeps a drill bit from wandering.
