El Real del Sastre

Uno de los habitantes de un pequeño pueblo de Castilla debía dinero a casi todo el mundo. Tantas deudas acumuló que llegó un momento en que le resultó imposible pasear tranquilo por la calle porque todos los vecinos se le acercaban reclamándole el dinero que les debía.
Para terminar con esta terrible situación se metió en la cama y se fingió enfermo. Todo el pueblo pasó por su casa para visitarle. Él se quejaba tanto y fingía tan bien la inexistente enfermedad que daba mucha pena y los vecinos, pensando que se iba a morir, comenzaron a perdonarle las deudas.
- ¡Pobrecito, qué enfermo está! -dijo el molinero- yo le perdono lo que me debe.
- ¡Qué mala cara tiene! -decía el lechero- yo también le perdono.
Y así, poco a poco, todos los vecinos del pueblo fueron perdonándole las deudas, todos menos uno: el sastre, que siempre decía:
- ¡Pues a mí me debe un real y me lo tiene que pagar!
Aunque los otros vecinos le rogaban que le perdonara el real, porque el pobre se estaba muriendo, el sastre continuaba diciendo:
- A mi me da igual que esté enfermo porque... ¡a mí me debe un real y me lo tiene que pagar!
Cuando el falso enfermo se convenció que el sastre nunca le iba a perdonar la deuda decidió fingir su muerte. Lo metieron en un ataúd y lo llevaron a la Iglesia del pueblo.
Cuando empezó a hacerse de noche los vecinos se fueron a dormir a sus casas, excepto el sastre que, como no se fiaba, decidió esconderse en uno de los confesionarios de la Iglesia para vigilar al falso muerto.
Por la noche entraron en la Iglesia doce ladrones para repartirse el botín de sus robos y pillerías. Aunque sólo eran doce el capitán de los bandidos ordenó hacer trece montones de monedas de oro. Cuando acabaron el reparto dijo:
- ¡Ese montón que sobra será para el que se atreva a darle una puñalada al muerto!
Se adelantó el más valiente de los bandidos, desenvainó su puñal y con paso decidido se acercó al ataúd.
Cuando el falso muerto vio que lo iban a matar de verdad dio un gran salto, se puso de pie y agitando los brazos gritó con todas sus fuerzas:
- ¡Venid difuntos!
El sastre, para ayudarle, derribó el confesionario haciendo mucho ruido y gritando también:
- ¡Allá vamos todos juntos!
Ante semejantes apariciones los bandidos huyeron despavoridos y no pararon hasta llegar a lo más profundo del bosque. Allí, al acordarse del tesoro que habían abandonado, el capitán ordenó a uno de ellos:
- Acércate a la Iglesia y entérate de lo que está pasando.
Entretanto el sastre y el falso difunto se estaban repartiendo las monedas de oro que los bandidos habían abandonado en su huida. Cuando acabaron el reparto el sastre que no se olvidaba del real que le debía dijo:
- Ahora ¡dame mi real!
En ese preciso momento llegó el bandido y al oír al sastre salió corriendo hacia el bosque y dijo a sus compañeros:
- No hay que pensar en volver por el tesoro, ¡hay tantos difuntos en la Iglesia que sólo tocan a un real!
