Many societies, especially hunting societies, have strong animal mythologies in wich the human and the animal world overlap.

The Native American Plains Indians had complex myths involving the buffalo, upon which they depend for food. In these myths the buffalo and the Indians once communicated in human terms and laid down the rules by which necessary hunting could take place in a atmosphere of mutual respect.

A Blackfoot myth tells tells how the buffalo taught the people a ritual dance and song which would restore the creatures killed for food.

The animals are seen as bestowing life and even social rules upon humans.

The central North American Dakota have a myth in which they given maize by the buffalo. Appearing first as a beautifull women, the buffalo gave the humans a pipe and maize and taught them how to use them. She also gave them rules for living and vital rituals to perform before turning in front of their eyes into a buffalo calf.

Every time the myth is told and the rituals performed the Dakota are reminded that animals have a superior wisdom and have given humans the guidlines for their society.
