A BRIEF GUIDE ON FASHION THROUGH THE 1900'S

<1920s> THE GREAT GATSBY, Characteristics: The garconne or boyish look was all the rage. It portrayed the ideal woman as an androgynous, working girl who was seen as an equal to men while simultaneously possessing the appeal of the femme fatale. KEY PIECES: Bobbed hair, long pearl necklaces, cloche hats, feathered headbands, knee-length shift dresses. STYLE ICON: Coco Chanel.

<1930s> THE GOLDEN AGE, Characteristics: The era of figure-hugging, bias-cut dresses, puffed sleeves, shoulder-length, wavy hair & tans. The 1930s were a time of glamour & elegance. KEY PIECES: Surrealist prints, unusually cut & pieced dresses, with oddly puffed & fitted sleeves, two-pieced suits with square-shaped jackets & narrow skirts. STYLE ICONS: Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich.

<1940s> HEROINE HITCHCOCK LOOK, Characteristics: The true hallmarks of fashion in the 1940s included an austere silhouette with narrow hips, padded shoulders, hats & turbans. KEY PIECES: Wedges, the turban, siren suits (original jumpsuit), peplums, A-line skirts, blouses with Peter Pan collars. STYLE ICONS: Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn.

<1950s> THE NEW LOOK, Characteristics, The constant rounds of cocktail parties & other social eventr all required dressing up. Christian Dior's "New Look" influenced fashion as did the conservative elegance of Coco Chanel. KEY PIECES: Circle & poodle skirts, ponytails, pumps & stilletos, ballet slippers. STYLE ICONS: Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe.

<1960s> MOD ABOUT YOU, Characteristics: Fashion in the 1960s tended to encourage exhibitionism. Clothes were geared to showing off women's bodies. KEY PIECES: Miniskirts, babydoll dresses, Dr Scholl clog sandals, lower kitten heels, flat boots, Pucci fabrics, Mondrain - inspired shift dresses. STYLE ICONS: Twiggy, Jackie O.

<1970s> SEX APPEAL, Characteristics: Part biker chick, part disco demizen. KEY PIECES: Bell bottoms, hot pants, ra-ra skirts, tube tops, halter tops, one-shoulder dresses, coin purses hung from the neck, go-go boots. STYLE ICONS: Bianca Jagger, Farah Fawcett.

<1980s> MTV GENERATION, Characteristics: The 1980s saw women's return to exaggerated femininity with a masculine edge embodied in the spiked heel & the miniskirt. KEY PIECES: Pompadour hairstyles, one-shoulder untucked shirts cinched with a large belt, leg warmers, shoulder pads, acid-washed jeans. STYLE ICON: Cyndi Lauper.

<1990s> HEROINE CHIC, Characteristics: Dressed down, minimalist. KEY PIECES: Flannel shirts, stone washed denim, denim overalls, Doc Martens shoes, "Rachel" haircut, basic black wardrobe. STYLE ICON: Kate Moss.
